Kowhai (Sophora tetraptera), also known as the New Zealand Laburnum is a bushy evergreen growing beside river streams and on edges of forests. Reaching over 12ft in height, the plant has attractive foliage – 1ft leaves made up of many small, oval leaflets.
The yellow flowers are borne in trusses hanging down from the drooping branches. They have a tubular shape and are about 2inch long. The name kowhai comes from the Maori word for yellow, representing the colour of the flowers. Kowhai is regarded as the unofficial national flower of New Zealand.
