About Mountain laurel
Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is an evergreen flowering shrub native to the eastern US, related to the bluebells and Erica plants. It is the state flower of Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
The shrub grows up to 9m tall, has long leaves and white to light pink flowers growing in clusters. It is a poisonous plant to animals and humans. It naturally occurs in the mountain forests but also as an ornamental plant due to its attractive flowers.
How to Crochet a Mountain laurel flower bud?

- Crochet cotton Size 5 colour A = white
- embroidery cotton colour B = pink.
- 1mm steel hook, 1.75 mm steel hook.

Crochet Flower Bud Pattern
Start: using 1.75mm hook and colour A make 3ch, join in ring with sl st, 1ch
R1: make 5sc, join in ring with sl st, 1ch
R2: make 2sc in each st = 10sc, join in ring with sl st, 1ch
R3: (2sc in next st, 1sc in next st) x 5 = 15sc, join in ring with sl st, 1ch
R4: (2sc in next st, 1sc in next 2 sts) x 5 = 20sc, join in ring with sl st, 1ch
R5: 20sc, join in ring with sl st, 1ch
R8: (make 2sc, skip next sc, make 1sc) x 5 = 15sc, join in ring with sl st, 1ch
R9: 15sc, join in ring with sl st, 1ch
R10: (make 1sc, skip next st, make 1sc) x 5 = 10sc, join in ring with sl st, change to colour B, fasten off A
R11: (make 1sc, skip next st) x 5 = 5sc. Fasten off B.
Mark 10 lines onto the base of the ball.
Using 1mm hook and colour A, start picking up sts from the surface of the ball going up on the marked lines towards the top: make 2sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1hdc, 4sc, fasten off = 1 ridge. Make 10 ridges.
